Nigeria: Frettic Spearheads Evolution in Nigeria's Gospel Music Industry

8 September 2024

Frettic, a renowned Nigerian music producer and sound engineer, is making notable strides in the gospel music industry, leveraging his passion and spiritual beliefs.

Known for his production credits with artists like Mega 99 and Kent Edunjobi, Frettic's work is characterized by versatility and a commitment to continuous learning.

Reflecting on his journey, Frettic attributes his success to his family's influence. "I count myself as a favored vessel born into a music-inclined family," he said. "My parents and siblings were my first inspiration, helping me take my initial steps into music."

Though he works across various genres, Frettic revealed that his connection to gospel music is especially strong. "I resonate better with gospel music because I consider myself a spiritual person," he explained. "While I do work with secular musicians, there's something about gospel that naturally connects with me."

On his views on the differences between the gospel and secular music industries in Nigeria, he said "Success is relative. For gospel music, success is about leading people to Christ, while for secular music, it's about financial gain. Both have their unique challenges--gospel artists strive to stay away from canality, while secular artists aim to avoid scandals."

Furthermore, Frettic also believes producers like himself play a crucial role in its evolution. "Producers today have experience across multiple genres, and we're infusing those elements into gospel music, making it more appealing to a broader audience," he said.

However, Frettic pointed out a shift in gospel music production over the years. "Unfortunately, melody has overtaken lyrics," he observed. "Gospel songs used to be heavily laced with Bible verses, but now, it's the melody that sells. Despite this, I remain committed to creating music that is simple yet impactful."

On his approach to music production, he said "I try to keep everything simple yet professional. A good music must be simple enough to 'score.' Anything other than that, you're entertaining yourself, not the audience."

Frettic has worked with the likes of the Adegbodu Twins, Dre-Sticks, Ayan Jesu, Evangelist Adelakun (Ayewa), and Esther Igbekele, among many others
