Nigeria: Lagos Orders Evacuation of Police Barracks Over Looming Collapse

19 September 2024

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has announced an emergency evacuation of Block 3 of the Mopol 20 Barracks in Onigbongbo, Ikeja, over concerns that it might collapse.

LASEMA stated that both the affected building and adjacent structures would be evacuated immediately to prevent loss of life or property.

Permanent Secretary Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu in a statement on Wednesday, noted that an assessment of the structure revealed an urgent need for evacuation to avert disaster.

"The agency dispatched a response team to the location, and their findings indicate that the building and adjacent structures must be evacuated without delay. Our response plan includes a thorough assessment, safe and orderly evacuation, and controlled demolition," Oke-Osanyintolu said.

He emphasised that under the leadership of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, the government will undertake this preemptive demolition to address the precarious condition of the building and mitigate the risk of secondary incidents.

Oke-Osanyintolu urged nearby residents to remain calm and avoid spreading misinformation on social media.
