Liberia: House Inspects DStv and Lbs Facilities

30 September 2024

During the facility inspection, lawmakers observed that Liberia National Television (LNTV), under the LBS, has successfully transitioned to digital broadcasting and currently airs content for 12 hours a day.

Over the weekend, the House Committee on Post and Telecommunications, led by its Chair, Mr. Ivar K. Jones, inspected the facilities of the state-owned Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS) and privately run DStv.

The inspection was part of the House Committee's ongoing efforts to engage key players in the telecommunications sector.

The purpose of the visit was to inspect and assess the upgrades being implemented by DStv to enhance studio capabilities for the production of quality content that promotes Liberian cultural heritage through film and television.

During the visit, the committee observed that DStv is actively upgrading its studios, reflecting the company's commitment to boosting the quality of local content and expanding opportunities for promoting Liberian culture on a larger platform.

As part of the committee's wider assessment of the telecommunications sector, the delegation also visited the LBS to evaluate its infrastructure and determine whether it meets modern digital standards.

The committee discovered that under the LBS, the Liberia National Television (LNTV) has successfully transitioned to digital broadcasting and currently airs content for 12 hours a day.

The inspection forms part of the committee's broader investigation into the telecommunications sector, specifically focusing on improving and promoting local Liberian content across media platforms consistent with Article 5b of the 1986 Constitution of Liberia.

The committee aims to ensure that national broadcasters and private operators like DStv are aligned with the goal of supporting the growth and visibility of Liberia's rich cultural heritage.

Rep. Thomas Goshua, Rep. Dorwohn Gleekia, Rep. P. Mike Jury, Rep. Foday E. Fahnbulleh, and House Press Director Robert Haynes accompanied the committee chair on the site visits.

The committee will continue its engagements with stakeholders in the telecommunications industry to drive the development of local content and the improvement of broadcasting standards in Liberia.
