Nigeria: Man Assaulted for Attempting to Swap Woman's ATM Card

22 October 2024

A mob descended on a man, identified as Kenneth Moses, for allegedly attempting to swap a woman's ATM card at a bank in Gwagwalada Area Council of the FCT.

A witness simply identified as James, said the incident happened on Monday, at about 8:47am when the woman, identified as Mrs Rebecca John, went to make a withdrawal at an ATM in the area.

He said the woman found it difficult to make a withdrawal from the machine.

"As the woman was trying to make withdrawal, the machine declined and the suspect standing at her back asked her to bring her ATM in order to assist her," he said.

He said the suspect while trying to insert the woman's ATM card suddenly swapped it and returned his to her.

"But as God will save the woman, she discovered that the ATM the man returned to her was not hers. And as they were arguing, the man tried to harass the woman when some people at the scene including some Okada riders rushed there and forcefully searched him, and discovered the woman's ATM in his pocket," he said.

He said it was in the process that some people descended on him before some security operatives came to his rescue.

It could be recalled that a similar incident happened last month at another bank branch in Zuba when a man attempted to swap a woman's ATM with another he had.

The spokeswoman of the FCT police command, Josephine Adeh, could not be reached for comment on the incident.
