Nigeria: Kano LG Polls - Don't Be Used Against Public Interest, Gov Yusuf Warns Judiciary

27 October 2024

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State, yesterday, cautioned the judiciary against being used to subvert public interest in Kano.

He made the call shortly after casting his vote at his Chiranci Ward in Gwale Local Government Area of the state.

The governor cautioned the third arm of government to dispense justice and equity in the electoral process in Kano.

Yusuf, who extolled the role of the Nigerian judiciary in entrenching the rule of law, however, claimed the Federal High Court sitting in the state is being used to subvert the will of people in the state.

His words: "We have respect for the Nigerian judiciary because it is the last hope of the common man. But when the judiciary now submitted itself to be used for partisanship, there will not be peace in the land. I want to urge the judiciary not to be used to subvert public interest in Kano.

"Let me emphasize again here that we would not be subjected to any intimidation from the judiciary and any quarter. We are peaceful and peace-loving people in Kano. But we would not be allowed to be pushed to the wall."

Earlier, the Chairman of the Association of State Independent Electoral Commission in Nigeria, who doubled as Chairman of Sokoto State Independent Electoral Commission, Alhaji Aliyu Suleiman, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the council poll.

Earlier, 2023 presidential candidate of New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, and the leader of the Kwankwassiya Movement, Senator Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso, alleged plots by opposition political parties to disrupt the exercise.

Kwankwaso made the allegation after casting his vote at his Kwankwaso Ward in Madobi Local Government Area of the state.

He alleged that the opposition political parties had disbursed large amounts of money to party chairmen to disrupt the election.
