As a nationalist and an illustrious son of Ebonyi State, his legacy not only reflects his personal achievements but also serves as inspiration to countless individuals striving for excellence, politics without bitterness and positive social change through mental re-engineering.
Born on December 1, 1951, in Ebonyi's salt enclave, Uburu, in Ohaozara Local Government Area, the late Dr. Onu's early academic pursuits laid the foundation for a remarkable career which defined who he eventually became. He was a student of the prestigious University of Lagos, where he earned a most-cherished first degree in Chemistry. That opened the floodgate of his foray into the academic world which he capped with a well-deserved master's degree and doctorate in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). As a scholar, he taught at several universities, including the University of Port Harcourt and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. His research, which focused on chemical engineering and its applications, has contributed significantly to Nigeria's scientific community. His academic accomplishments were pivotal in shaping his analytical prowess and helped him to develop his problem-solving mindset, which was a quality that later differentiated him from others when he berthed at Government House Umuahia as the governor of the then newly created Abia State.
Dr. Onu's foray into Nigeria's political sphere began in the early 1990s when he became the first democratically elected governor of Abia State in 1991. His very short tenure was remarkable in so many ways. The transformative policies that he enunciated made him to fix his leadership gaze on the development of public infrastructure leading to radical investments in education, health care, and agriculture. Despite the challenges that he faced, including political turbulence and economic constraints, Dr. Onu saw today yesterday and maintained a forward-looking vision for Abia State, which present day Ebonyi State was part of. Under his watch, the foundations for the future growth of the states were laid thus publicly demonstrating his adeptness at navigating the complexities of governance.
He was clearly instrumental to the registration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) having played a key role. As a member of the party, Dr. Onu's political journey took a broader turn when he was appointed the Minister of Science and Technology, and later, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, in the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. Here, he piloted the establishment of the National Science, Technology and Innovation Roadmap (2017-2030), a strategic framework aimed at positioning Nigeria as a leader in science, technology, and innovation. It was in this role that he truly harnessed his passion for scientific advancement and innovation. Recognizing the integral role of science and technology in national development, Onu championed initiatives that promoted research, innovation, and the adoption of modern technologies in various sectors. His belief that Nigeria's future prosperity lay in embracing science and technology resonated across the country.
One of Dr. Onu's notable contributions during his tenure was his unwavering advocacy for the commercialization of scientific research. His vision was for the country's abundant human resources to be harnessed to fuel economic growth through innovation.
His initiatives to establish various science and technology parks facilitated collaborations between the academia and industry, ensuring that research findings translated into practical applications for the good of mankind.
