Born on December 1, 1951, in Ebonyi's salt enclave, Uburu, in Ohaozara Local Government Area, the late Dr. Onu's early academic pursuits laid the foundation for a remarkable career which defined who he eventually became. He was a student of the prestigious University of Lagos, where he earned a most-cherished first degree in Chemistry. That opened the floodgate of his foray into the academic world which he capped with a well-deserved master's degree and doctorate in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). As a scholar, he taught at several universities, including the University of Port Harcourt and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. His research, which focused on chemical engineering and its applications, has contributed significantly to Nigeria's scientific community. His academic accomplishments were pivotal in shaping his analytical prowess and helped him to develop his problem-solving mindset, which was a quality that later differentiated him from others when he berthed at Government House Umuahia as the governor of the then newly created Abia State.
