Nigeria: Customs Clarifies Demolition of Mosque At Idiroko Command Premises

The Idiroko Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has clarified concerns surrounding the recent demolition of a mosque under construction within its premises.

According to a statement by the Command's Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent Hammed Oloyede, the mosque was demolished because it was built without official approval, which conflicted with the command's master plan.

Customs Area Controller, Mr. James Ojo, dismissed claims that the Officer in Charge of Building ordered the demolition of the mosque at Nigeria Customs Secondary School, Idiroko. He explained that the mosque project had commenced without authorization, prompting its relocation to an approved site within the command premises. Ojo assured the public that efforts are ongoing to ensure the mosque's timely completion at the new location.

"The attention of the Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun 1 Area Command, has been drawn to a recent viral video alleging that the Officer in Charge of Building directed the demolition of an ongoing mosque construction at the Nigeria Customs Secondary School, Idiroko," Ojo stated. "After a thorough investigation, it was confirmed that the mosque's construction was unapproved and conflicted with the master plan for the school and junior barracks."

Ojo emphasized that the Command already provides sufficient religious facilities, including existing mosques and a chapel within its jurisdiction. He noted that the mosque in the junior barracks was recently renovated and expanded under the supervision of the same Officer in Charge of Building.

To foster respect and understanding among all parties, Comptroller Ojo personally intervened, committing to lay the foundation for a new mosque at the designated site. He pledged support to ensure the project's timely completion according to command protocols.

The NCS urged all stakeholders to exercise patience and respect for religious sensitivities. Comptroller Ojo also encouraged the school administration to maintain harmonious relations within the barracks community.
