West Africa: Liberia Muslim Women Network Prepares for 10th Anniversary Hijab Day Celebration

Monrovia — The Liberia Muslim Women Network (LMWNet) has commenced preparations for its 10th Anniversary Hijab Day celebration, scheduled to take place on February 1, 2025, at the Fish Market United Foundation School campus on Tubman Boulevard.

Madam Fatimazahra Aboubacar Maiga, president of LMWNet, announced that the event aims to raise awareness about the importance of wearing the hijab. The program will begin with a parade from the Muslim Council headquarters on the Old Road in Congo Town and culminate at the Fish Market United Foundation School.

According to Madam Maiga, the celebration will feature various activities, including participation from Muslim schoolgirls, other organizations, and individuals, with non-Muslims also invited to attend.

"Our organization was established in 2015, and it is dedicated to advocating for women's empowerment, not only for Muslim women. Our primary focus is to promote the wearing of the hijab and address issues of modesty, violence, and other disadvantages faced by women. We stand firmly for the empowerment of all women," she emphasized.

Madam Maiga highlighted that LMWNet is committed to helping Muslim women embrace their identity while wearing the hijab. She noted that many Muslim women face challenges moving freely in society due to misconceptions about the hijab.

"We want to encourage our Muslim sisters to understand that they can achieve their dreams and goals while proudly wearing the hijab. It is part of our identity as Muslim women and reflects the will of Allah," she stated.

She added, "The Liberia Muslim Women Network is an advocacy group for the rights of Muslim women to wear the hijab anywhere in Liberia. The hijab is not just a personal choice but a principle of Islam, and we are committed to raising our children in adherence to the Islamic dress code."

Madam Maiga recounted that the idea to establish the organization came from a Liberian Muslim sister based in the United States. With a shared passion for promoting the hijab, the network mobilized women across Monrovia and the 15 counties of Liberia.

"We are grateful to Allah for the positive responses we have received from Muslim sisters nationwide. Our mission is to continue spreading awareness about the importance of the hijab," she revealed.

As the 10th-anniversary celebration approaches, Madam Maiga called on LMWNet members to actively prepare for the event. She also encouraged other Muslim women who are not yet part of the organization to participate in the program and learn more about the significance of the hijab in Islam.
