The 14th Governing Council Meeting of the Africa Fertilizer Financing Mechanism will discuss the proposed transition from the Mechanism's current structure to the "Africa Fertilizer Financing Mechanism 2.0." The redesigned mechanism will focus on developing innovative financial products to attract private sector investments, thereby strengthening the fertilizer supply chain, ensuring smallholder farmers' access to fertilizer and promoting soil health interventions.
Council members will also review the Africa Fertilizer Financing Mechanism's 2024 Annual Report and its proposed work program and budget for 2025.
The African Union Commission will chair the meeting, with additional participation from the African Development Bank Group, the Coordinator of the Africa Fertilizer Financing Mechanism, African ministries of agriculture, the Pan African Farmers Organization, the International Fund for Agriculture Development, the Food and Agriculture Organization, the African Export-Import Bank, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, AGRA, the International Fertilizer Development Center and the International Fertilizer Association.
The Mechanism's 14th Governing Council meeting takes place around the African Development Bank co-organized, "High-level Conference on Scaling Finance for Smallholder Farmers in Africa," which concludes 18 March 2025. During the conference, the Council aims to integrate fertilizer financing with broader agricultural investment and ensure that financial solutions effectively reach and empower smallholder farmers across the continent.
The Africa Fertilizer Financing Mechanism is a special fund administered by the African Development Bank Group. The mechanism provides innovative financing solutions to improve the production, procurement, and distribution of organic and inorganic fertilizers, as well as interventions to upgrade soil health in Africa.
