West Africa: Silencing the Watchdogs - an April 2025 Overview of West Africa

In April 2025, civic space in West Africa remained under considerable strain, with freedom of expression continuing to come under attack.

A total of eleven violations were recorded across six countries, highlighting a persistent pattern of repression through arrests, detentions, media suspensions, and targeted harassment of journalists and activists.

This report highlights the key incidents documented during the month and outlines recommendations for safeguarding press freedom and civic expression in the region.

With support from the 11th Hour Project of The Schmidt Family Foundation, the MFWA continues to monitor and document these violations as part of efforts to promote a free and safe civic space in West Africa.
