Liberian Defender Dweh Leads Aerial Duels in Czech First League

Sampson Dweh, the Liberian defender who plies his trade with FC Viktoria Plzeň, has distinguished himself in the Czech Republic First League by achieving the highest number of aerial duels won in the 2024-2025 season.

On June 6, the club shared a post on their official Facebook page celebrating his aerial dual victories. "VICTORIAN BEST. Dweh boasts an impressive aerial duel success rate of 66%, averaging 4.0 wins per game. These accomplishments this season support FC Viktoria Plzeň's claims regarding his defensive prowess.

This season, Dweh has exhibited a well-rounded defensive record, including 13 clean sheets, an average of 1.8 interceptions and 2.2 tackles per game, as well as 0.3 possessions won in the final third. He averages 4.4 ball recoveries, 0.3 successful dribble passes, and 5.9 clearances per match. Though he has made 4 errors that led to shots and 2 that resulted in goals, he has committed only 1 penalty and received 5 yellow cards but no red cards during the 2024-25 season.

In 2023, the Liberian defender initially moved to Viktoria Plzeň on loan from MFK Vyškov, before securing a three-year deal worth €385,000 on July 1, 2024. His outstanding performances quickly established him as the first-choice center-back for the renowned Czech club, making him a key element of their defensive line.

Having represented Liberia 35 times and scored once, the defender has gained international recognition. His performances have attracted interest from clubs across France, Turkey, Spain, England, and Germany. While Viktoria Plzeň is open to offers and understands his ambition to embrace new challenges, they are keen to retain him as they prepare for the Champions League starting from the second qualifying round.

It is widely understood the Liberian likes to break with the defensive line both out and in possession to win the ball in midfield or progress the ball from midfield. This can be seen in his heat map from the 2024-25 Chance Liga season thus far. The talent is usually on the right side of the defence and offers both an aggressive and progressive force for Plzen.
