Nigeria: United Nigeria Expands Global Reach With Sabre Deal

United Nigeria Airlines has launched its application on Global Distribution System (GDS), integrating it to connect the airline to over 50,000 travel agencies in more than 200 countries.

Speaking during the launch, the chairman, United Nigeria Airlines, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, said the integration would enable efficient ticket sales and position the airline as a more accessible carrier on the global aviation map.

"This is in keeping our promise to go global as quickly as we can. These are things that were lined up as part of our set out objectives, but have been a little bit delayed by the top lines we have seen in the country and especially in the aviation sector in the last two, three years. But we can be delayed, but definitely not stopped," he said.

He stressed that the airline plans to build capacity by 2000 per cent, including six 737-800NG and four big-body aircraft by November 2026.

"We need to increase our inventory and this time next year, we would have increased our capacity by over 2,000%. From October to November, we will be inducting into our fleet, not less than four big-body aircraft.

"From February to April next year, we will have six 737-800NGs in our fleet. With this, we will not only be strengthening the local operations in Nigeria, but we will have the proper positions to put our regional, continental and intercontinental flights," he said.

He added that the integration would not only enhance domestic connectivity but also support the airline's regional, continental and intercontinental expansion, with plans for flights to West Africa, the UK, the U.S., and other global destinations.

He stressed that the airline would commence its first regional flight to Accra, Ghana, scheduled for August 25th.

The Director, Sabre (Airline Solutions - Africa), Robert Bryan, emphasised the need for technology to improve efficiency in the airline industry, saying that the firm is aimed at providing technology solutions.

"So this shows that the industry in Nigeria is advancing and that there are strong players here. And that companies like United Nigeria are the future for what aviation can do here today," he said.
