Liberia: Humanitarian Group Calls On Liberian Government to Support Aging Population

Monrovia — Word of Life International (WLI) has urged the Liberian government to include dedicated funding for the aging population in the national budget.

Speaking on June 16, during an event marking World Elder Abuse Awareness at WLI's Pipeline Community compound in Paynesville, Program Manager Augustine Ndorbor stressed the need for government programs and financial support aimed at improving the lives of senior citizens.

"We want the government and local and international organizations to create programs and allocate funds to care for older people, who are no longer working and deserve dignity," Ndorbor said. He announced plans to engage Liberia's Legislature, possibly through a petition, to push for these budget provisions.

WLI Ageing Focal Person, Rebecca KG Nyamndo, highlighted the organization's efforts to provide livelihood support and raise awareness about elder care throughout Montserrado County. She called for an end to violence against older people and appealed for increased government involvement.

More than 100 elderly individuals attended the event, where speakers echoed calls for enhanced welfare programs for Liberia's aging population.
