The African Natural Resources Management and Investment Centre (ECNR) of the African Development Bank Group will host a high-level webinar on 25 June 2025 to explore how Africa can better harness its vast mineral resources through value addition and downstream development.

Titled "Beyond Mineral Extraction: Downstream Lessons from Indonesia and Chile for Africa", the webinar will spotlight the policy, legal, and institutional frameworks that have enabled these countries to ascend the mineral value chain--transforming raw exports into industrial and economic opportunities.

With Africa holding over 30% of global mineral reserves and immense renewable energy potential, the continent is uniquely positioned to lead in the global green energy transition. Yet, much of its critical mineral output continues to be exported in raw form, with limited benefits for local economies.

Together, policymakers, industry leaders, and technical experts will delve into Indonesia's experience with nickel, including its mining law reforms, export bans, and industrial park development, as well as Chile's copper governance model, rooted in strong institutions, fiscal stability, and balanced public-private participation. These experiences offer actionable lessons for Africa as it begins to implement the African Green Minerals Strategy (AGMS), a continent-wide framework endorsed by African Union Heads of State in February 2025.

The webinar will feature insights from African Development Bank specialists and global experts in mining governance, industrial policy, and sustainable infrastructure. Participants will gain practical knowledge in policy sequencing, infrastructure development, investment incentives, and regional cooperation required to unlock the full potential of Africa's mineral endowment.
