The African Development Bank will host a high-level workshop for representatives from African Regional Economic Communities, River Basin Organisations, development finance institutions, policy and technical experts working across water, agriculture, energy, and environment sectors.
The workshop will present the Bank's investment framework under its Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem Nexus Initiative, and its approach to integrated planning and investment across these interconnected sectors. It aims to engage and gather feedback from the target participants to shape the implementation of the framework and governance, around its ten-year investment pipeline. It will also introduce the Bank's planned knowledge platform under the initiative.
The Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem Nexus Initiative responds to growing pressure on Africa's natural systems, where climate change, resource scarcity, and increasing population growth threaten food security, water availability, energy reliability, and ecosystem health.
The initiative recognizes the need to move beyond siloed investments and adopt integrated cross-sector strategies that encourage collaboration, manage trade-offs, and improve resilience across interconnected systems. The initiative also aims to support the development of tailored financing solutions that can attract large commercial investment, supporting the broader ambitions and commitments made at the Government of Senegal and African Development Bank co-organized Dakar 2 Food Summit - a watershed gathering in January 2023 that resulted in billions of dollars in commitments to advance Africa's agricultural transformation. It will further contribute to providing access to electricity with focus on hydropower generation under Mission 300 - an initiative by the African Development Bank and the World Bank Group to connect 300 million Africans to electricity by 2030.
The upcoming workshop will include two high-level panel discussions featuring African ministers, African Development Bank sector directors, and representatives from regional organisations and development partners.
The workshop will also explore the continent's priority needs for nexus investments, the challenges of financing integrated projects, and strategies for preparing investment-ready projects.
