Liberia: Acting BSE DG Commissions Audit After Massaquoi Suspension

In a decisive move to promote accountability and good governance, the newly appointed Acting Director General of the Bureau of State Enterprises (BSE), Varlee F. Sanor, has commissioned the Internal Audit Agency (IAA) to conduct a comprehensive audit of the institution.

The audit came following the immediate suspension of Arthur S. Massaquoi from his duties as Director-General of the Bureau of State Enterprises (BSE).

His decision, according to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, follows credible reports of financial and administrative malpractices allegedly committed under Mr. Massaquoi's leadership.

However, the audit is expected to assess financial records, operational efficiency, and compliance with public sector regulations, ensuring a transparent and accountable working environment for the BSE and its workforce.

Sanor emphasized that the audit is a critical step in rebuilding public trust and strengthening the BSE's mandate of overseeing state-owned enterprises (SOEs). "Transparency and accountability are the cornerstones of effective governance," he stated. "This audit will not only identify areas for improvement but also set a new standard for integrity within the institution."

The audit comes at a pivotal time as the government intensifies efforts to curb mismanagement and inefficiency in public institutions. By engaging the IAA -- an independent body tasked with ensuring fiscal discipline -- the BSE demonstrates its commitment to upholding best practices in public administration.

Upon completion, the audit report will be reviewed, and necessary reforms will be implemented to foster a culture of openness and efficiency at the BSE.

Sanor urged all employees to cooperate fully with the IAA, underscoring that the exercise is not punitive but rather a pathway to institutional improvement.

As Liberia continues its push toward sustainable development, initiatives like this audit reinforce the government's dedication to good governance and the prudent management of state resources.
