Nigeria: FCT Rural Women Trained On Cassava Processing, Branding

The Women Affairs Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and UN Women have begun a program to empower over 150 women in cassava processing and branding for the international market.

Dr. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, Mandate Secretary of the secretariat, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday.

Benjamins-Laniyi explained that the empowerment is part of the FCT's "BaYunwa: Ba Fushi" economic empowerment project, supported by UN Women. "BaYunwa: Ba Fushi" is a Hausa expression that means "no hunger: no anger." (NAN)

She stated that the beneficiaries were drawn from the Sheda community in the Kwali Area Council of the territory, with the aim of improving agricultural businesses in rural communities.

The empowerment program, which began on July 9, seeks to harness Sheda women's entrepreneurial skills in processing and branding "akpu," a local delicacy, for the international market. (NAN)
