As part of its commitment to develop essential infrastructure across Africa, the African Development Bank, in collaboration with the Government of the Central African Republic, will inaugurate new facilities developed through the First Drinking Water and Sanitation Sub-Programme (PSEPA) in Bangui and surrounding rural areas.

The project aims to improve sustainable access to potable water for urban communities by expanding capacity in water production, storage, and distribution. It forms part of the national strategy to improve living conditions and build resilience to climate change.

Key infrastructure to be inaugurated:

  • A new raw water pumping station, increasing capacity from 1,500 m³/h to 2,500 m³/h, equipped with modern electric pump units, an 800 kVA transformer, and an 850 kVA generator to ensure uninterrupted production.
  • A floating dewatering station to provide year-round raw water pumping capacity of 1,500 m³/h and an 800 mm HDPE connection pipe over 400 metres.
  • Replacement of obsolete asbestos-cement discharge pipes with two 700 mm ductile iron lines, spanning over 1,000 metres.
  • Commissioning of new boreholes in peri-urban and rural areas of Mambéré Kadéi, Nana Mambéré and Ouham prefectures, complemented by training programs for local technicians to ensure equipment maintenance and sustainability.

The inauguration marks a major step in improving access to drinking water for more than 1.2 million people in Bangui, Berberati, Bouar, Bossangoa and their surrounding areas. It reflects the strong commitment of the Bank and the Government of the Central African Republic to delivering quality basic services and strengthening communities' resilience to water-related challenges.
