Mohamed Chérif, Deputy Director General of the African Development Bank Group for Central Africa and Head of the Bank's Country Office in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has formally assumed duties, following the presentation of his credentials to the country's government.
The presentation, made to Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, the Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Francophonie of the DRC, took place at a ceremony held at the Ministry premises in Kinshasa, the country's capital, on 20 November.
Ms Kayikwamba Wagner praised the excellent relations between the DRC and the Bank Group and reaffirmed the government's commitment to strengthening its partnerships with continental institutions. "The African Development Bank Group remains a strategic partner for the DRC," she said, calling for both to "move forward together for development led by Africa and for Africa."
The Minister urged the African Development Bank Group to maintain its leading role in the continent's development, and assured Mr Cherif of her Ministry's support. "You can count on our help as you begin to carry out your functions and to interact with public institutions," she emphasized.
Chérif emphasised the long-standing ties between the DRC and the Bank, dating back more than 50 years. "The DRC has been a member of the Bank Group and has benefited from its financing since 1973," he said. "The DRC is one of the largest countries on the continent, with immense potential. It is essential to further strengthen our cooperation, to accelerate development."
He added: "When projects are successful, there is a direct benefit for ordinary people. Our goal remains unchanged: to support development, reduce poverty and improve the living conditions of the Congolese people."
The African Development Bank Group's active portfolio in the Democratic Republic of Congo totals more than $1.6 billion, covering the agriculture, transport, energy, drinking water and sanitation, governance, human capital, and digital sectors. The Bank's portfolio in the DRC is one of the Group's largest in Central Africa in terms of commitments.
