Over ten people, including a serving councillor, were reportedly killed following a fresh clash between farmers and herders in Donga Local Government Area of Taraba State.
Among those killed were a councillor representing Akete Ward in Donga Local Government Council.
A source in Donga town, Lawal Adamu, told Daily Trust that the crisis broke out on Saturday at Gundom village.
He said trouble started when a herder allegedly led his cattle into a farm in the village, destroying crops.
According to him, villagers reportedly apprehended the herder and killed him, an action that sparked violent reprisals between farmers and herders in the area.
Lawal said the ensuing violence led to the death of more than ten people, including the councillor.
He added that the exact number of casualties on both sides could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Taraba State Police Command, ASP Victor Mshelizah, confirmed the incident.
He, however, said that only three dead bodies and a wounded woman had so far been recovered by the police at the scene.
Mshelizah said the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Donga Division is leading a team of operatives in a search of nearby forests to determine if there are more casualties.
