Nigeria: 23rd Daily Trust Dialogue Holds Today

In furtherance of its commitment to nation building and sustainable development across Africa, the Media Trust Group has concluded plans to hold the 23rd Daily Trust Dialogue today, at NAF Conference Centre and Suites, Abuja.

The company's Chief Executive Officer, Ahmed I. Shekarau, in a statement, said this year's edition, with the theme "Nigeria's Fourth Republic: What Is Working and What Is Not," will take a critical look at how the nation has fared since its return to civil rule in 1999.

Public figures within and outside the government will speak extensively on the theme of the event by examining issues shaping the current Republic, and providing valuable insights to catalyse good governance and development.

According to the statement, former Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, will chair the 23rd Dialogue, while His Imperial Majesty, the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, will serve as Special Guest of Honour.

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, erstwhile member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Nnenna Elendu Ukeje and Special Adviser to the President on Media and Policy Communication, Mr. Sunday Dare, will be the guest speakers.

Launched in 2004, the DAILY TRUST Dialogue provides a platform for Nigerians and other Africans to dissect salient sociopolitical and economic issues so as to drive change, enhance national and continental integration and promote sustainable development.

The high-level forum hosts political leaders, policymakers, captains of industry, academics, professionals and other critical stakeholders across Nigeria and Africa annually, to discuss issues that concern the continent.

Since its launch, various topics of national and regional concern have been discussed at the forum. These include political developments, economic renaissance in some parts of Africa, African unity, democratisation, creeping authoritarianism, crippling debt, inter-African issues, successful and failed regional groupings, unfinished liberation struggles, ongoing conflicts, xenophobia, secessionist pressures, youths fleeing to Europe, and Africa's relations with world powers, among others.

Some of the key themes examined at recent editions included "Restructuring: Why, When, How?," "2023: The Politics, Economy and Insecurity," "Interrogating the 2023 Presidential Agenda," "Tinubu's Economic Reforms: Gainers and Losers", and "Food Security: Availability or Affordability?"

Some of the past guest speakers were Prof. Attahiru Jega, former Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman; the late Pa Ayo Adebanjo, former leader of Afenifere, a Yoruba socio-cultural group, and Chief John Nnia Nwodo, former President-General of Ọhanaeze Ndigbo; former Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Mrs. Ifueko Omoigui-Okauru; Dr. Murtala Rufa'i, a senior lecturer at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto; and Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, former Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Bola Tinubu.

Others were Dr. Eugene Enahoro, son of the late nationalist, Chief Anthony Enahoro; Mrs. Ibukun Awosika, former Chairperson of First Bank of Nigeria; and Dr. Yetunde Anibaba, a public policy leader and senior lecturer at the Lagos Business School; Dr. Victoria Akai, former Director General, Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Comrade Joe Ajaero, National President, Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC).

The dialogue has also featured notable personalities such as former President Olusegun Obasanjo; former military president Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida; former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar; former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan; former Chief Justices of Nigeria (while in office); former Senate Presidents (while in office); former Speakers of the House of Representatives (while in office); state governors, senators and members of the House of Representatives, ministers, members of the diplomatic corps and captains of industry, among others.

Guests from across Africa were former President of Botswana, His Excellency, Mr. Festus Mogae; late former President of Ghana, Flight Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings; Tanzania's ex-Prime Minister, Dr. Salim Ahmed Salim; the late Mrs. Winnie Mandela of South Africa's anti-apartheid struggle; Dr. Mo Ibrahim of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, and Mrs. Samia Nkrumah, daughter of the late Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's former president and reputable pan-African nationalist.
