Nigeria: Kano Rep - Kwankwaso Betrayed Atiku in 2019

25 January 2026

Deputy House Minority Leader, Hon. Aliyu Sani Madaki, has taken a swipe at the leader of Kwankwasiyya movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, over his description of January 23, 2026, as "World Betrayer Day'.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who is said to be on his way to the All Progressives Congress (APC), announced his resignation from the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP), on January 23, 2026.

While addressing his loyalists at his Miller Road residence in Kano, Kwankwaso made reference to the day, saying the idea of adopting the day as such was inspired by social media commentators who described the governor's NNPP exit as an act of betrayal.

But Madaki, an estranged associate of Kwankwaso, who exited NNPP in November 2024, said Kwankwaso is the real betrayer.

Reacting in a Facebook post in Hausa language, Madaki, who represents Dala Federal Constituency, said, "Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has declared 23/01/2026 as a date to be marked as the International Day of Betrayal.

"In my view, 23/02/2019 is the appropriate date to be designated the International Day of Betrayal.

"This was the same day Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso nominated candidates, whom he later abandoned because of an agreement with the APC. At the same time, he betrayed HE Atiku Abubakar to settle the scores over his defeat at the party's primary election in Port Harcourt."
