The Adamawa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday formally received Abba Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, following his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), amid a wave of political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Receiving him at the APC state secretariat in Yola, the party's chairman, Barrister Shuaibu Idris, said Abba's defection was a strong indication of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's growing national acceptance, including within elite opposition circles. He described the move as a clear demonstration of confidence in the president's leadership and administration.
According to Idris, the decision of the son of a leading opposition figure to openly identify with the ruling party underscored the widening appeal of Tinubu across party and family lines. He praised Abba for what he described as an independent, bold and patriotic choice, saying it showed a willingness to place national interest above personal and emotional considerations.
Idris assured the new entrant of equal rights and opportunities within the APC, stressing that the party was committed to justice, equity and fairness for all members. He added that the leadership of the party in the state, led by the National Security Adviser, warmly welcomed Abba into the APC fold.

Also speaking, the party's organising secretary, Mustapha Atiku Ribadu, described the development as historic, noting that it coincided with the defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State to the APC on the same day. He said Abba Atiku Abubakar had shown political foresight and independence of judgment.
In his remarks, Abba Atiku Abubakar thanked the party leadership and members for the warm reception, saying it had strengthened his resolve to work for the APC's success. He pledged to mobilise support for President Tinubu's re-election in 2027, declaring his full loyalty to the party.
The ceremony was marked by a carnival-like atmosphere, as party faithful, youth groups and supporters thronged the venue to welcome the new member.
