Nigeria: Trade Boost in Kano As FG Commissions Economic City

28 January 2026

The Federal Government has commissioned Phases One and Two of the Economic City Bichi Road in Kano State, describing the project as a strategic intervention aimed at boosting trade, improving connectivity, and stimulating economic activities across the North-West region.

The commissioning ceremony took place at the project site in Bichi and was performed on behalf of the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement, Mr. Abdullahi Tanko-Yakasai.

Speaking at the event, the Controller of Works in Kano State, Engr. Abdulsalam Dayyabu, said the project was executed in two phases, with each phase covering a cumulative distance of 1.5 kilometres.

He explained that the construction involved lateritic, soft, and stone base works, complemented by binder and wearing courses, as well as reinforced concrete-lined drainage structures designed to enhance durability and manage flood risks.

He added that the contract was awarded in January 2024 and completed in October 2024, leading to the commissioning of the road.

He described the road as a critical infrastructure within the Economic City Bichi.

Dayyabu also noted that it would significantly improve accessibility, facilitate commercial activities, and accelerate socio-economic development in the area and its environs.

Similarly, in his remarks, Tanko-Yakasai said the project formed part of the Federal Ministry of Works' ongoing North-West zonal tour under the supervision of the Minister of Works.

He disclosed that the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has embarked on 260 special intervention projects nationwide, with the North-West geopolitical zone receiving 48 projects--the highest among the six zones.

"The North-West, comprising Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Kaduna states, has benefited immensely from these interventions. The projects reflect the administration's commitment to infrastructure development, economic growth, and balanced regional development," he said.

Tanko-Yakasai also highlighted other key projects in the region, to include the ongoing dualization of the Kano-Katsina Road, with sections passing through both Kano and Katsina states.

Also as part of the tour, the Federal Government also commissioned the repair of washouts at three culvert locations and failed sections along the Kwanar Garko-Kibiya Road, as well as a special intervention project addressing flood-related damage to hydraulic structures along the Wudil-Darki Road.

It was also revealed that residents of communities hosting the projects expressed satisfaction with the interventions, commending President Tinubu for initiating what they described as impactful and people-oriented projects.
