The Kwara State Police Command also confirmed the incident.

Police spokesperson, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the attack on the community began at about 6pm on Tuesday.

She said security agencies have since been deployed to the affected area, noting that the exact number of casualties is still being ascertained.

Ejire-Adeyemi added that reports of missing persons are currently under investigation.

Speaking after arriving in Kaiama on Wednesday night, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq confirmed that 75 residents were killed in what he described as a brutal attack by extremists.

The governor said the victims were targeted for resisting a perverted doctrine being preached by the attackers.

He described the incident as a cowardly expression of frustration by terrorist cells.

Addressing the Emir of Kaiama during a condolence visit, AbdulRazaq said, "We commiserate with you over the death of 75 of your subjects.

"These villagers abide by their Islamic faith and do not want any alteration. Because they refused to change their doctrine, they were attacked and massacred.

"It is different from what we used to see, where people are kidnapped or ransacked. This was a pure massacre, and it is truly condemnable."
