Nigeria: Botswana Taps Nigerian Energy Leader to Drive Power Sector Reform

3 March 2026

Botswana Power Corporation, BPC, has concluded plans to address persistent electricity supply challenges, expand its renewable energy footprint and become a net exporter of clean energy in the near term with the appointment of Nigerian energy leader, Akinwole II Omoboriowo, as Vice Chairman of its Board of Directors.

Omoboriowo is a leader in African power infrastructure and energy finance, bringing over two decades of experience in utility-scale generation, project structuring and cross-border energy development.

He currently serves as Chairman and CEO of GENESIS Energy Group, where he has led utility-scale generation projects totalling more than 780MW in operation, under construction and at advanced development stages across Nigeria, South Africa, Benin Republic, Zambia, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Mali and the United Kingdom. The company also has a project development pipeline exceeding 4.5GW.

With this appointment, he is expected to help steer Botswana's power sector at a time when recent World Bank-sourced energy generation data indicate that the country's electricity output at key coal plants has fluctuated significantly. Morupule B's production declined from 3,328 GWh in 2022-23 to 2,674 GWh in 2024-25, reflecting instability in domestic supply capacity.

Reacting to his appointment on LinkedIn, Omoboriowo acknowledged the confidence reposed in him by President Advocate Duma Boko of Botswana and the Minister of Minerals and Energy, Bogolo Kenewendo, describing the role as an opportunity to contribute to a national institution at a critical stage of its development.

He stated: "I assume this responsibility with humility, but with buoyancy, high commitment to duty and unwavering dedication to delivery. The work ahead is substantial, but so too is the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a critical national institution at an important moment in its evolution."
