Nigeria: FG Fulfills Promises As d'Tigress Receive Houses, National Honours

17 March 2026

The Federal Government has redeemed its pledge to the D'Tigress, awarding the African champions with national honours and houses as promised by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

It will be recalled that during a special reception in honour of the team, Vice-President Kashim Shettima pledged each player a three-bedroom apartment in recognition of their Afrobasket triumph in August 2025 in Côte d'Ivoire.

Nigeria defeated Mali 78-64 to claim their seventh AfroBasket title, a victory that also secured the team a spot at next year's FIBA Women's World Cup.

In a formal ceremony, the players and officials were presented with certificates of National Honours and title documents for the houses allocated to them in Abuja.

The presentation was carried out by Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), and Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director-General, alongside other top government officials in Lyon, France

Mallam Dikko described the gesture as evidence of a president who acts on his words, emphasizing that Nigerian sports could not ask for a better leader than President Tinubu at this pivotal moment in the country's sporting history.

"I want to thank Mr. President for making sports work again in Nigeria and giving every athlete renewed confidence that sports can truly change lives. It is not just leisure; it is a serious business," he said.

"The President is proud to honor you with these awards and houses because you have consistently placed Nigeria on the global stage with your performance, patriotism, and never-give-up spirit."

He also assured the team that the monetary incentives promised by the President are in the final stages of processing and will soon reflect in their bank accounts.
