Nigeria: NUJ Condemns Police Assault On Bauchi Journalist, Demands Compensation

23 March 2026

The Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly condemned the assault on a staff member of Albarka Radio in Bununu, Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area, during the Sallah celebrations.

In a statement signed by its Secretary, Isah Garba Gadau, the Union described the attack as a violation of human rights and direct assault on press freedom.

"This act of brutality is a gross violation of human rights, a direct attack on press freedom and a disgraceful display of lawlessness by officers who are expected to protect, not harm, citizens."

He noted the timing was especially troubling, coming amid the NUJ's ongoing push for professionalism and accountability within security agencies.

The Union called on the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, to launch an immediate investigation and sanction all officers involved in the incident.

NUJ also demanded that the Police Command cover all medical expenses incurred by the victim, warning that failure to comply would force the Union to convene an emergency congress to determine the next steps.

The Council urged media houses across the state to stay alert and follow further directives, stressing that the safety and dignity of journalists must be fully protected.

The NUJ reaffirmed that it will not tolerate intimidation, harassment, or violence against journalists under any circumstances.
