Nigeria: Fight for Jimoh Ibrahim's Senate Position Begins

29 March 2026

A fresh tension has arisen over who will replace Senator Jimoh Ibrahim following his confirmation and posting to the United Nations as Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the World body.

It was gathered that Ibrahim, who represents Ondo South and is awaiting accreditation and submission of his letters of credence at the UN in New York to assume duties, is said to be pushing someone from the same federal constituency as his replacement.

A source close to the unfolding high politicking in the area said, "We are analysing all information and a team will soon be sent there so that there won't backlash because of wrong decisions on the part of anyone. We are aware that a particular ethnic bloc is populous, and that is the Ikale, where Senator Jimoh comes from.

"And if the senator has been appointed as an envoy, another local government can be considered but not the governors federal constituency because that means one local government will have both the senate and House of Representatives slots; and conversely, taking the Reps slot to the governors local government will be too glaring an overload as it means both governor and and Teps will come same local government"

LEADERSHIP Sunday gathered that those angling to replace Senator Ibrahim are: Barrister Morayo Lebi (Irele/Okitipupa federal constituency), a former two-time member of the House of Representatives; Mayo Akinfolarin; Mathew Oyerinmade; and Boye Oyewunmi (the trio from Odigbo/Ileoluji/Okeigbo federal constituency).

Others include the former deputy governor and governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) in the 2024 election, Hon Agboola Ajayi, as well as the newly re-elected National Vice chairman(South West) of the APC, Dr Isaac Kekemeke, who both hail from the same Ilaje/Ese-odo federal constituency as Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
