Nigeria: Army Urges Public Not to Panic Over Shooting Exercise in Lokoja

31 March 2026

Nigerian Army has disclosed that its 12 Brigade Headquarters would commence its first annual Range Classification Exercise for 2026 at the Chari Maigumeri Shooting Range in Lokoja, Kogi State.

The four-day, which ends on April 2, 2026, was announced in a statement yesterday by Lt Hassan Abdullahi, the acting assistant director of Army Public Relations for the 12 Brigade.

Abdullahi said the exercise was designed to enhance the shooting proficiency of officers and soldiers, strengthen operational readiness and support ongoing efforts to combat banditry and other security challenges within the Brigade's area of responsibility. It will also assess the serviceability of weapons in use by the unit.

The Army, therefore, called on residents of Shettima, Zango and the surrounding communities not to panic at the sound of gunfire or the movement of troops and military equipment during the period.

The residents were further advised to stay away from the shooting range area throughout the duration of the exercise for their safety.

The Brigade urged the media and community leaders to sensitise the public, including translating the information into local languages to ensure wider understanding.

Lt Abdullahi conveyed the appreciation of the commander, 12 Brigade and Force Commander, Operation Accord III, Brig-Gen. Kasim Umar Sidi, for the continued cooperation of the public.
