Nigeria: Ex-Imo Senator Dumps Labour Party for APGA, Joins Guber Race

Senator Athan Achonu, who represented Imo East in the 8th Assembly, has announced his resignation from the Labour Party and joined the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Senator Achonu also announced his intention to contest for the Imo governorship during the 2027 election. He made the announcement while speaking on the state of the nation on Sunday.

The Senator also urged the federal government to immediately commence a thorough investigation into how sitting governors and local government chairmen are spending distributed subsidy funds.

Senator Achonu expressed regret that since the removal of the fuel subsidy, billions of naira have been disbursed to states and local government areas with nothing to show for it.

He also criticized the "excessive power" wielded by the leadership of the Progressive Governors Forum, claiming they frequently exert undue influence over federal ministers.

During the briefing, he also threw his support behind the creation of Anioma State and pleaded with President

Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

While announcing his intention to contest the Imo State governorship under his new party, the Senator called for increased decorum in the nation's political landscape.
