Nigeria: Ajadi Courts Support of Oyo Federal Constituency Leaders Ahead of 2027 Governorship Race

14 April 2026

The leading governorship aspirant in Oyo State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has intensified consultations with party stakeholders, calling for unity and grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.

Ajadi made the appeal on Monday during a strategic meeting with political leaders from Afijio, Atiba, Oyo East and Oyo West Federal Constituencies. The meeting, held at Abiodun Atiba Area, Kosobo in Oyo Town, focused on strengthening party cohesion and aligning interests within the PDP.

Addressing stakeholders, Ajadi said his ambition is rooted in service and loyalty rather than personal gain.

"I am deeply grateful for this gathering and the show of support. This is not just about my ambition; it is about the collective progress of our party and the future of Oyo State," he said.

He also acknowledged his political roots, pledging to uphold values of loyalty, service and integrity.

Ajadi commended former Senator Monsurat Sunmonu for her continued influence and contributions to the growth of the PDP in Oyo State, describing her as a stabilising force whose leadership has strengthened party unity and grassroots mobilisation.

In her remarks, Sunmonu, who represented Oyo Central in the Senate, urged party members to remain united and steadfast ahead of future elections.

"We have several aspirants across all levels, but what is most important now is unity. The PDP will not die, but we must stay committed to its survival and growth," she said.

She also acknowledged Ajadi's loyalty during challenging periods within the party, noting that his commitment has contributed to strengthening its structure in the state.

Sunmonu, however, cautioned against any leadership that could undermine the achievements of Governor Seyi Makinde.

"We will not allow anyone who will destroy the legacy of Governor Makinde to succeed him. Whoever emerges must respect party leaders and sustain the progress already made," she added.

Earlier, the meeting facilitator, Hon. Shakiru Ojo, commended Ajadi for his engagement with party leaders, describing his presence at Sunmonu's recent birthday celebration as a sign of political maturity.

Other stakeholders, including Chief Sunday Ogunlade, praised Ajadi's dedication and loyalty to the PDP, noting that his contributions have helped sustain the party's competitiveness in Oyo State.

Participants from various constituencies also stressed the need for inclusive leadership, urging aspirants to maintain strong ties with party structures and prioritise grassroots engagement.

Voices from women and special interest groups were also highlighted, with calls for greater inclusion in political participation.

The meeting ended with a vote of thanks by Alhaji Olatunji Qodri and a closing prayer led by Hon. Adekunle Gbade.

The gathering is seen as part of ongoing grassroots consultations ahead of the 2027 governorship race, as stakeholders continue to consolidate support and strengthen internal unity within the PDP in Oyo State.
