Nigeria: Troops Kill 30 Terrorists Near Lake Chad

23 April 2026

Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have killed no fewer than 30 insurgents and destroyed several boats during an operation along the Lake Chad waterways near the Kaniram Island axis in Borno State.

OPHK spokesperson, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, disclosed this in a statement, saying the operation was carried out from late Tuesday night into early Wednesday.

He said the air component maintained sustained surveillance and confirmed the presence of over 30 terrorist boats used for movement and supply in the area.

"Acting on credible Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance inputs, air assets established persistent presence and confirmed the concentration of terrorist elements coordinating logistics activities," he said.

Uba noted that after careful target identification in line with rules of engagement, troops carried out precision air strikes that destroyed the boats and disrupted the terrorists' logistics network.

He added that follow-up strikes targeted fleeing insurgents within nearby vegetation, leading to the neutralisation of over 30 fighters.

He said the operation significantly degraded the terrorists' mobility and operational capacity, while surviving elements were seen fleeing in disarray, indicating a breakdown in their command structure.
