Nigeria: Foundation to Launch Book On Abubakar Sokoto Mohammed Today

29 April 2026

Friends, colleagues, comrades and admirers of the late scholar-activist, Dr Abubakar Sokoto Mohammed, are set to gather in Abuja today for a symposium and book presentation in honour of the former academic, journalist and socialist intellectual, whose life was defined by struggles for justice, equality and social transformation.

The event, organised by the Abubakar Sokoto Mohammed Foundation, will be held at BON Elvis Hotel, Abuja, where his influential work, 'The Satiru Revolt of Peasants and Slaves in the Sokoto Caliphate', will also be presented for wider circulation.

Abubakar Sokoto Mohammed, who died on December 11, 2025, was described by associates as "the very definition of a progressive," whose life was dedicated to improving society and defending the oppressed.

According to organisers, the symposium is designed not only to celebrate his life but also to preserve his intellectual and political legacy for future generations.

"His life was a permanent struggle to leave society better than he found it, to improve the lives and livelihoods of the downtrodden and to defend causes that would improve justice, equality, social harmony and peace," a statement by associates said.

Sokoto began his academic journey at the Department of Sociology, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, in 1976 as part of a generation of radical scholars committed to social transformation.

Despite alleged institutional resistance due to his ideological orientation, he remained a prominent figure in ABU's radical intellectual tradition and later taught at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.

Beyond academia, he also had a rich media career, working with Crystal Magazine, Sokoto State Broadcasting Corporation and The Path newspaper, while also participating in policy engagements at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru.

His major scholarly contribution, The Satiru Revolt, examined the 1906 anti-colonial uprising against feudal and colonial oppression in the Sokoto Caliphate, drawing attention to the destruction of Satiru by British colonial forces.

"He was a committed intellectual whose entire career was devoted to the social question in Nigeria and indeed in Africa and the rest of the world," the statement added.

Associates also remembered him as a staunch advocate of Nigerian unity, Pan-Africanism, gender equality and academic freedom.

He was active in socialist movements such as the Socialist Congress of Nigeria (SCON), Women in Nigeria (WIN), ASUU, and anti-apartheid platforms, including the Movement for Progressive Nigeria (MPN).

"Across all these spaces and spheres, he directly impacted thousands of people," the organisers said.
