Nigeria: Group Praises Akpabio, Wife Over 'Steadfast Support' for Igbo Cause

29 April 2026

A socio-cultural organisation, the Igbo Union Ndi Igbo Worldwide, has praised Senate President Godswill Akpabio and his wife, Unoma Ekaite Akpabio, for what it described as their sustained support for Igbo interests.

In a statement issued in Abuja yesterday by its national convener, Elias Odoemena, the group said the couple had remained "formidable allies" in advancing the progress of Igbo people in Nigeria.

The organisation described Senator Akpabio's marriage to an Igbo woman from Enugu State as a "continued blessing" to the Igbo, adding that it had contributed to development efforts across the region.

It said the Senate President had demonstrated commitment to fostering unity between the South-East and South-South, citing infrastructure projects and employment opportunities facilitated during his tenure as governor of Akwa Ibom State and in his current role.

According to the statement, Akpabio had helped strengthen political and economic ties between the regions, including the construction of a bridge linking Abia State and Akwa Ibom.

The group also noted that the couple enjoyed widespread respect across Igbo communities due to what it described as their contributions to development and social welfare.

It added that plans were underway to honour Mrs Akpabio for her support for Igbo causes.
