Nigeria: Abia Guber - Group Buys APC Forms for Deputy Speaker Kalu

A coalition of political stakeholders has purchased the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship nomination and expression of interest forms for the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, urging him to join the Abia governorship race.

The forms were presented to Kalu in Abuja at the weekend, amid growing pressure to contest the election.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, leader of the group, James Uko-Kalu, said the move was driven by Kalu's performance in public service and his leadership record at the National Assembly.

"We recognise the invaluable contributions the Deputy Speaker has made to Nigeria's legislative process. From 2019 till date, we have followed his work closely and can attest to his outstanding performance," he said.

Uko-Kalu described the Deputy Speaker as a unifying figure whose consensus-driven leadership style is needed in Abia State.

Also speaking, retired Major General Jack Nwaogbu commended Kalu's role in rebuilding the All Progressives Congress in Abia and across the South-East, noting that the party has witnessed renewed strength in recent months.

"In the past seven months, there has been a remarkable rejuvenation of the party, largely due to his efforts and other committed leaders," he said.

Similarly, Barr. Uzo Azubuike, who spoke on behalf of stakeholders from Abia South, described the group as "messengers of the people," urging Kalu to heed calls to contest.

Responding, Kalu expressed appreciation for the gesture and the confidence reposed in him, saying he would consult widely before making a final decision.

"The purchase of this form is clearly a call for me to step forward. I have received it, I will make my position known," he said.

He emphasised that his immediate focus remains strengthening the APC in the South-East and mobilising support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.
