Liberia: Read to Succeed Launches Second Edition to Strengthen Early-Grade Literacy in Liberia

- The second edition of the Read To Succeed Program has officially commenced, marking another important step toward improving literacy outcomes for children in Liberia.

The three-year program is sponsored by Help Alliance, the corporate social responsibility arm of Lufthansa through Brussels Airlines, and is implemented by the Rosetta Steps Education Foundation. The initiative is designed to strengthen teachers' capacity to deliver effective reading instruction while helping students develop essential phonics, vocabulary, fluency, sight-word recognition, and comprehension skills.

As part of the second edition, four teacher-training sessions have already been conducted for a total of 65 teachers from participating schools in Montserrado and Grand Bassa counties.

The participating schools include Goshen Academy in New Kru Town, Acres of Hope in Rock Hill, Nyonblee Cares Foundation Speed School in Buchanan, and New Kru Town Public School.

During the training sessions, teachers were introduced to practical strategies for teaching phonics, sight words, reading fluency, comprehension, and classroom-based literacy assessment. The sessions also provided opportunities for teachers to exchange experiences, strengthen their confidence, improve their public-speaking skills, and develop more engaging approaches to reading instruction.

The Read To Succeed Program recognizes that teachers are central to improving learning outcomes. By equipping educators with appropriate teaching methods, learning materials, coaching, and ongoing support, the program aims to create lasting improvements that will continue beyond the three-year implementation period.

The program is run by the Rosetta Steps Education Foundation, which was established in honour of the late Rosetta Benson Harris, a dedicated Liberian teacher and school administrator who worked with the Monrovia Consolidated School System and served as principal of William V. S. Tubman High School and G. W. Gibson High School.

Rosetta Harris was born and raised in a low-income community and understood the important role education could play in changing the lives of children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The Foundation was therefore created to continue her legacy by improving learning outcomes and expanding educational opportunities for children and families from low-income communities.

The second edition builds on the achievements and lessons of the previous phase of the Read To Succeed Program. It reflects the continued commitment of Help Alliance, Brussels Airlines, the Rosetta Steps Education Foundation, participating schools, teachers, volunteers, and community partners to addressing Liberia's early-grade literacy challenges.

Through this partnership, the Read To Succeed Program is expected to reach more students, improve classroom teaching practices, and provide children with the foundational reading skills they need to succeed in school and later life.
