Nigeria: More States Show Interest in L-Pres Livestock Project - FG

8 October 2026

The Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maih, said more states in the country are showing interest in the Federal Government of Nigeria/World Bank Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) due to impact of its interventions across participating states.

The minister stated this during the project's Implementation Support Mission in Yola, Adamawa State.

"What we are seeing from L-PRES across the participating states is encouraging. The interventions are visible, the impact is being felt, and this is why more states are showing interest in joining the project.

Our responsibility now is to build on these achievements, strengthen implementation and ensure that the benefits reach more livestock farmers and communities," the Minister said.

Declaring the mission open, the Minister said L-PRES has become an important part of the Federal Government's efforts to transform Nigeria's livestock sector, with interventions already making a difference in participating states.

He urged the project teams to use the mission to take a closer look at implementation, address areas requiring improvement and ensure that investments translate into sustainable results for livestock farmers and other value-chain actors.

The mission, holding from 5-10 October 2026, brings together the *Federal Government team, including representatives of the Federal Ministries of Finance and Livestock Development, relevant government agencies, the World Bank, the L-PRES National Coordinating Office, State Coordination Offices, and key stakeholders across the livestock sector.

The mission provides an opportunity to review implementation progress, share experiences and lessons, address emerging challenges and agree on practical steps to strengthen project delivery across participating states.

Speaking at the opening, the World Bank Task Team Leader for L-PRES, Dr. Manievel Emmanuel Sene, said the mission is centred on socialisation, orientation, learning and updating progress on project implementation.

He said the mission provides an important platform for the Federal and State teams to learn from one another, discuss what is working, identify areas that require greater attention and use lessons from implementation to improve delivery.

The National Project Coordinator of L-PRES, Dr. Sanusi Abubakar, welcomed participants to Yola and said the mission comes at an important stage of project implementation.

"This mission gives us the opportunity to look at where we are, what is working and where we need to improve. We must be open about the challenges we face, learn from one another and remain focused on delivering results that livestock farmers and communities can see and feel," Dr Abubakar said.

He noted that L-PRES is recording progress across key areas of the livestock value chain, including animal health services, livestock infrastructure, water provision, pasture and feed development, production systems and market access.

According to the NPC, the growing interest from additional states is encouraging, but also places greater responsibility on the project to maintain the quality of its interventions and improve implementation.

"As more states show interest in L-PRES, expectations are also growing. We have to maintain the quality of our work, strengthen implementation and ensure that every intervention delivers real and lasting value," he added.

Dr. Abubakar thanked the Honourable Minister for his leadership and continued support to L-PRES, as well as the World Bank, Federal Government institutions, participating state governments and project teams for their collaboration and commitment.

The FGN/World Bank L-PRES Implementation Support Mission continues in Yola until 10 October 2026, with technical sessions, progress reviews and discussions aimed at addressing implementation challenges, strengthening coordination and accelerating the delivery of results across participating states.
