Fund Fatigue Threatens Response to Sahel Famine

The malnourished children of Kanim, Chad, offer a stark illustration of the severe food and nutrition crisis in the Sahel region of West Africa. Senior United Nations have warned that the lack of funds due to global inaction could lead to a humanitarian disaster.

One critical response is ready-to-eat therapeutic food - a high-protein, high-energy paste filled with essential nutrients. A malnourished boy eats UNICEF-provided therapeutic food at a nutrition centre in Mao. Food shortages in Africa’s Sahel Region are threatening 1 million under-five children - including more than 100,000 in Chad - with severe malnutrition. UNICEF is requesting US$65.7 million to support initial life-saving responses.
