Africa: Herders Help Eradicate Livestock Disease

Research in Science provides new insights into the successful battle against the devastating cattle disease rinderpest in Africa. In an interview with AllAfrica, the report's lead author and scientist behind the rinderprest vaccine, Jeffrey Mariner, said much of the vaccine's success can be attributed to the contributions of nomadic herders.

Rinderpest, known as "cattle plague" in English, is thought to have had its origin in the dense cattleherds of Central Eurasia more than two millennia ago.
