Nigeria No Longer a Leading U.S. Oil Supplier

Nigeria, until recently the fifth largest exporter of crude oil to the United States, did not export a single barrel of crude to U.S.-based refiners in July for the first time since records started in 1973, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Preliminary numbers also indicate the trend continued in August and September, the Financial Times reported. India is now the largest importer of Nigeria's crude with China and Malaysia following closely, according to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. This sharp decline could impact other African exporters, including Angola, Libya and Algeria.

A report by the U.S. Senate Republican Policy Committee, issued in June 2013, shows the decline in American oil imports as production of shale oil from fracking has risen.
