Government 'Ruins' Scheme to Reduce Mothers' Deaths
An investigative report by Premium Times of Nigeria, where the maternal death rate is among the world's highest, says the Nigerian government has failed to pay midwives who were recruited to save more of the estimated 30,000 women who die annually from pregnancy or childbirth. Global Goodwill Ambassador for the International Confederation of Midwives Toyin Saraki, who launched the Wellbeing Africa Foundation, says most Nigerian women do not have a skilled attendant present when giving birth - and that midwives save lives of both mothers and babies.
