Opposition Supporters, Ugandan Police Battle as Meeting Blocked
Supporters of Kizza Besigye, a former presidential candidate, engaged officers in six-hour running battles in Soroti after police blocked a meeting he had organised. The battles, in which supporters threw stones at armed police officers who had cordoned off the venue, left scores injured and some in hospital.
"It is unfortunate that even after getting clearance from the Inspector General of Police, police officers went ahead to block his rally."
