New Police Commissioner Appointed In South Africa

"The appointment of General Khehla Sitole will go a long way in bringing stability to the South African Police Service and enhance focus in the fight against crime," the Independent Police Investigative Directorate's Robert McBride has said. The position of commissioner has been dogged by controversy over the years, with a few incumbents being fired. The latest casualty was former commissioner Riah Phiyega, the first woman appointed, who was implicated in the police action that saw over thirty protesting Marikana miners killed in 2012.
