Sani Abacha's regime was marked by human rights abuses, attacks on the press and the jailing of political opponents, including Moshood Abiola who is believed to have won the annulled 1993 election. During his regime, it is estimated that he and member of his family stole over £5 billion from the country's coffers. The late dictator was Nigeria's 10th Head of State. He served as the de facto president of Nigeria from November 17, 1993 till June 8, 1998.
