AU Summit 32 Tackles Refugees, Displaced Persons and Migration

After the AU's decision to designate 2019 as the Year of Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons, there is now a move to shift the issue from Political Affairs to a new department for health, humanitarian affairs and social development. This departmental shift opposes the global trend of dealing with displacement as a security issue, but will the change address decades of forced displacement in Africa?

Adagom refugee settlement, run by UNHCR, was established in August 2018 to host some of the Cameroonian refugees living in local communities around Cross River. In early December 2018, it was hosting more than 6,400 refugees.
