Prominent Kenyan Soccer Star's Political Dream Hits Snag
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has said McDonald Mariga's name does not appear on the voter register and therefore cannot run in the Kibra constituency parliamentary by-election. Mariga is East Africa's most successful footballer having played in the UEFA Champions League, Italy's Serie A and Coppa Italia titles he won at Inter Milan in 2011. He quit active soccer after 16 years, to pursue a career in politics.
