What You Need to Know About Tropical Storm Ana

Tropical Storm Ana has caused widespread destruction and triggered flooding across southeast Africa. Fatalities were reported in several countries including Mozambique, Malawi and Uganda. In Mozambique, the death toll has risen to at least eight people, the country's National Institute for Disaster Management said on Wednesday, January 27, 2022.

The storm made landfall in southeastern Africa on Monday January 24 and carried on through Tuesday with winds reaching up to 100 kilometers per hour, destroying buildings, disrupting infrastructure, forcing hundreds to flee their homes.

Ana is the first 'named' storm of 2022. On January 23, 2022 it moved towards the tropical waters of the Mozambique channel from Madagascar, where it caused widespread flooding, including in the capital city, with a death toll from heavy rains reaching 34 and the displacement of more than 55,000 people.

This comes as countries in the region are still trying to recover from Cyclone Idai which ravaged Southern Africa in 2019. The continent is feeling the effects of changes in global climate faster and more intensely than other continents.
