Deadly Spate of Shootings Highlights Rising Crime In South Africa

Communities in Khayelitsha township in Cape Town have been visited by ministers in the security cluster. This is in response to multiple shootings that claimed the lives of 11 people over the the weekend of July 16 and 17, 2022.

The latest incident comes in the wake of similar killings in the provinces of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, though authorities deny any link between the incidents, with Police Minister Bheki Cele dismissing the possibility that these could be coordinated attacks by terrorists.

The attacks unleashed a wave of anger at the police for failing to curb high levels of violent crime in the country. According to Voice of America, crime has overall been on the rise in the country. The first quarter of 2022 saw over 6,000 murders - the highest rate for any quarter in the last five years, as per police statistics.
