Many Worshippers Killed, Injured In Egyptian Coptic Church Fire

Egypt's Ministry of Health has reported that at least 41 people were killed when a fire broke out at the Coptic Orthodox Church on August 14, 2022 in the densely populated Cairo suburb of Imbaba. Witnesses said the fire started following a short circuit in an air conditioning unit, VOA reports.

In a statement, the church said that the incident occurred during the Divine Liturgy (holy communion), and that a number of worshippers were transferred from the scene to Imbaba General Hospital and Agouza Hospital.

Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly and General Ahmed Rashed, the governor of the Giza province where the church is located, visited the scene of the fire. They expressed the government's condolences along with pledges to help the families of the victims. Authorities will set up technical and engineering committees to investigate the cause of the fire.

Many of the victims were children.
